Try Out The Punishment

For Kids

Inveraray Jail is a great place for children to visit.

They will see for themselves that often young children were tried, sentenced and imprisoned here in the Jail for the smallest of misdemeanours, for example stealing turnips.

There are plenty of 'hands on' experiences where they can stretch out in the hammock, lie on a hard wooden bed or be locked behind bars in the airing yards.

They can turn the wheel of the hard labour Crank Machine or feel what it is like to be strapped to the Whipping Table.
On entry children will receive a Parole Certificate and if they obtain four separate embossed stamps located around the Jail they will achieve early release for good behaviour and a free gift!

A visit to the Jail is definitely a good lesson on how lucky children are today!

Did You KnowDid You Know?In the early days of the Old Prison prisoners wore their own clothes. New regulations brought in during the 1840's stated that, on arrival, all convicted prisoners should be issued with a set of prison clothing.
