Welcome to Inveraray Jail

Inveraray Jail
is a living museum and top Scottish visitor attraction where real people portray life in a 19th century prison. Interact with costumed characters, watch courtroom trials, talk to the prisoners, meet the Warder, go to jail and witness cell life, sample the punishments, browse the exhibition of prison artefacts, then make your escape. Also, join the UK's top ghost hunters in ghost hunting nights and paranormal investigations.

A superb visitor attraction with interest and excitement for all ages, Inveraray Jail is a place where you can tour at your own leisure and offers great family deals, senior concessions, private tours, group bookings and educational visits.

If you plan to stay near the Jail, we have some featured accommodation and there are a number of hotels in Inveraray, some B&Bs and plenty of self-catering accommodation. There is also a wider selection of all sorts of accommodation in Argyll.

Annabelle MacFarlane gave birth to her son in the Old Prison on 13th August 1846. She had been sentenced to 60 days in prison for stealing half a chest of tea. Annabelle had no home and it is believed she stole the tea to make sure she had a warm, safe place for the birth.
