The Jail & Courtroom Experience

Walk in their footsteps

Torture, Death and Damnation

On your first stop, discover the gruesome punishments used before modern courts existed. Feeling brave?  Try out the real thumbscrews. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

The Historic County Courtroom

Visit the actual courtroom where real trials were held over 150 years ago.  Take a seat among the witnesses, imagine standing in the dock, and feel the tension as the verdict is read.

The Old Prison Cells

Step into the narrow corridors of the Old Prison and peer into cramped cells where children were locked up next to lunatics.  Hear keys jangle, boots echo and the mischief behind bars.

The New Prison

Compare the Old Prison with the new, built in 1848 as a “model” Scottish jail. Try the hammocks, wooden beds, or the infamous whipping table.  Four floors await, from grim to giggle-worthy.

Airing Yard

Stand in the space created for daily exercise and fresh air. But watch out for the Warder, he may lock you up!
